Tupelo, an eight member bluesy country band will perform (www.tupelomusicband.com).
Speakers include a returning Peace Day volunteer recruiting for the Peace Corps. Two young people from the Institute for Community Leadership of Kent will present their original poetry and interpret Alice Walker’s poem, Why War is Never a Good Idea. A Conscientious Objector who
served two years of alternative service with the Quakers in Seattle during the Vietnam War will also speak.
If you cannot attend, you can support PEACE DAY with your Sponsorships and Donations.
PEACE DAY is accepting Sponsorships. Gold Medal Sponsorships are $500, Silver Medal Sponsorships are $300, Bronze Medal Sponsorships are $150, and Blue Ribbon Donations are $75.
Individual donations of $5, $10, $15, $20, $30, $40, $50, will pay for PAC Rental and live band.
Be generous. PEACE DAY is a worthy cause.

My name is Ken Iverson. I am a graduate of Kent-Meridian High School, 1961, and Stanford University, BA, 1965. I am working on a project called PEACE DAY. The First Annual PEACE DAY Celebration will be on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center at KM High School in Kent, WA, 7:00 PM.
There will be live music for this First Annual PEACE DAY Celebration, a band called Tupelo (see www.tupelomusicband.com.). There will be three speakers. A returning member of the Peace Corps will speak and be recruiting for the Peace Corps. Two young people from the Institute for Community Leadership will perform original poetry as well as interpret Alice Walker’s poem, Why War is Never a Good Idea. A Conscientious Objector who served two years of alternative service with the Quakers in Seattle during the Vietnam War will also speak.
PEACE DAY is dedicated to two of my great nieces, ages 7 and 8, both coincidentally and ironically named Grace and Gracie, and to the children of their generation from my Mother’s generation, what Tom Brokaw calls the Greatest Generation, the men and women who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. My Mother is 90. Also, PEACE DAY is dedicated to the Graces’ generation from my generation, the Baby Boomer generation, and from Graces’ parents’ generation.
The idea for PEACE DAY came from A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney on the CBS Television show 60 Minutes. It aired on November 8, 2009. He was looking for a day to balance Veterans Day and did not have a name for it, referred to it as “A No War Day”.
The next day, November 9, 2009, I wrote a letter to President Obama suggesting we might celebrate PEACE DAY on Flag Day, June 14, and that the connection between the Flag and Peace is worthy of a great nation. President Obama replied in a letter dated January 4, 2010, thanking me for my idea and suggestion.
At Christmas, 2009, one of my nephews, Dan, the Father of Grace, suggested we start celebrating PEACE DAY this year, 2010. Grace’s birthday is June 13. She will be 8. While the First Annual PEACE DAY Celebration will not be on Flag Day as originally conceived, it will be held on the Saturday after Independence Day. The 4th , on Sunday this year, and PEACE DAY, will bookend the week of July 5th.
With the war in Iraq winding down and as the war in Afghanistan continues, what better time for Peace. It is my hope that we leave on the evening of July l0, not willing to die nobly for a cause, but rather to live humbly for a cause, the cause of Peace.
